Melissa's Holiday Message

I think there is a misperception that there is always another day. Language like "I'll do that tomorrow" puts us in the cycle of waiting. But I really think it is important not to wait. Deep, lasting connections are tough to make, let alone find. If you find someone you can connect with - as a friend, partner, romantic interest - find space in your life for them. Life is so short. There are people that are no longer in my life - my grandmother, in particular - that I wish I could spend more time with. While you are breathing, don't waste this precious time. Reach out this holiday season. Hold onto your connections. Make a new friend. It may change your life for the better.

I’m happy to announce the publication of my latest, peer-reviewed article: “ Wasted Planet: How Educators Can Introduce the Epic Trash Crisis ”. This article is published by the Journal of Sustainability Education.  Waste education tends to be about recycling, reducing, and reusing. In this article, I expand on waste education. I introduce what I am calling, ‘Trash Dialogues’. These dialogues encourage broader conversations of waste, to think about how our everyday garbage is an economic, geopolitical, ethical, environmental, and socio-cultural issue, tied to environmental racism and waste colonialism. Truth and Reconciliation

I acknowledge  that the land I live on is the traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Mississauga and Chippewa Nations of the Williams Treaty.  I recognize that  forced residential schooling has caused  intergenerational trauma and  emotional and physical pain for Indigenous Peoples in Canada. I value and respect Indigenous pedagogies and epistemologies.
