School's out -- but learning is lifelong!

Earlier this year, I was asked by a non-profit food and agriculture organization to design some teaching activities. In the spirit of open educational resources, I have posted some activities below. If you try any of these activities, please let me know! I would appreciate your feedback. Share your photos and thoughts on social media using #SustainableAgriculture.

Some sample activities:

Take a walk around your community and take food related photos (e.g., food waste, food prices, food preparation, menus). Now, take a look at your photos. What story do these photos tell you about the food industry? What do these images reveal about the relationship between humans, health, communities, economics, and the natural environment?

It is common to hear the phrase, “buy local, eat local”. But what does this mean? How might this phrase be too simplistic? Read Paul Allen’s article titled, “The facts about food miles” to think deeper about this idea.

Let’s get cooking! Make a plant-based recipe (e.g., fruit, bean or vegetable salad) and share your culinary delights with others. Discuss why you made this particular recipe, how you prepared it and the dietary benefits. Inspire others to eat healthy!

Grocery stores stock food products that claim to be healthy like Kettle Brand potato chips, Nature’s Path Organic cereals, Blue Diamond almond milk, Panda Licorice, MadeGood snacks, and Beyond Meat burgers. But are these products healthy? What ingredients do they contain? Make a case for or against one of the above products.
