I know the wildfires burning across Canada are putting a damper on getting outside and enjoying the sunshine. When the natural environment suffers, we all suffer (but not equally).
I have referred to Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in my presentations and writings. It remains an inspiration to me. Carroll's tale is much more than a children's fable. It has several layers of meaning, and can be read from different perspectives.

While the "white rabbit" (seen pictured above) is key to Carroll's work, I keep seeing wild, brown rabbits running around my neighbourhood. So, I thought I would honour these majestic creatures by sharing a National Geographic video about wild rabbits. Enjoy!
Earlier this year, I was asked by a non-profit food and agriculture organization to design some teaching activities. In the spirit of open educational resources, I have posted some activities below. If you try any of these activities, please let me know! I would appreciate your feedback. Share your photos and thoughts on social media using #SustainableAgriculture.
Some sample activities:
Take a walk around your community and take food related photos (e.g., food waste, food prices, food preparation, menus). Now, take a look at your photos. What story do these photos tell you about the food industry? What do these images reveal about the relationship between humans, health, communities, economics, and the natural environment?
It is common to hear the phrase, “buy local, eat local”. But what does this mean? How might this phrase be too simplistic? Read Paul Allen’s article titled, “The facts about food miles” to think deeper about this idea.
Let’s get cooking! Make a plant-based recipe (e.g., fruit, bean or vegetable salad) and share your culinary delights with others. Discuss why you made this particular recipe, how you prepared it and the dietary benefits. Inspire others to eat healthy!
Grocery stores stock food products that claim to be healthy like Kettle Brand potato chips, Nature’s Path Organic cereals, Blue Diamond almond milk, Panda Licorice, MadeGood snacks, and Beyond Meat burgers. But are these products healthy? What ingredients do they contain? Make a case for or against one of the above products.
It's that time of year again. Those pesky mosquitos are back! If you already have a few mosquito bites, like me, you might want to check out some home remedies. Applying lemon, garlic or even aloe vera to the skin is said to help eliminate mosquito bite itch. I tried the baking soda trick. It seemed to work! You can find a full list of remedies here.
Fall 2023, I will be working with college students on "exploratory AI projects". So, I thought I would start by learning more about AI. Is artificial intelligence something to fear? What possibilities does it offer? How can AI help solve the climate crisis?
Recently, I watched Yuval Noah Harari's lecture on "AI and the Future of Humanity".
My interest and work is in higher education. So, I'm exploring the question: What impact will AI have on higher education?
Join me! Let's explore AI together. Consider the impact AI has on your life and work.
It's prom season.Anyone else digging out their high school yearbooks and thinking about their old school chums? I wish I could go back, do prom one more time: the dress, the photos, the dancing, the hugs from friends. But since I don't have a time machine, I will just dance...
Question: What are you looking for? Who is your ideal partner?
My answer: My ideal boyfriend/ life partner -- someone who is loyal, honest, trustworthy, makes me smile. I'm looking for "I've got YOUR BACK love," something John Mayer talks about on his album, Where the light is.
My answer: No. The toaster broke, again! This led me to reading an interesting New York Times article on why toasters don't last. Part of the reason -- they are not durable. Read the article here.
